Last week, a Los Angeles jury issued a verdict of $417 million against Johnson & Johnson (J&J) in a talcum powder lawsuit filed by a 63-year-old woman who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer after decades of using the company’s Baby Powder product for feminine hygiene. This is the largest verdict ever awarded in a lawsuit linking ovarian cancer to J&J’s talcum powder products.

Links Between Talc Products and Ovarian Cancer
The victim had been using Baby Powder for feminine hygiene since she was 11 years old. She stopped using the product in 2016 after reading a story about a woman who used this product and developed ovarian cancer. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2007 and was too ill to testify during the trial.
The 63-year-old is just one of thousands of women who received a cancer diagnosis after using the company’s talc-based products. Studies dating back to 1971 link talc to ovarian cancer, as talc particles were found in tumors in the cervix and ovaries of many women. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has categorized talc as possibly carcinogenic if it is used in the female genital area.
Talcum powder products, such as J&J’s Baby Powder, are often used by women for their drying effects.
Other Talcum Powder Verdicts
More than 1,000 lawsuits have been filed against J&J, alleging a link between talcum powder products and ovarian cancer. So far, only a few have gone to trial, but most of those were decided in favor of the victims:
- In May 2017, a jury awarded a Virginia woman $110 million
- In Oct. 2016, a woman who claimed her ovarian cancer diagnosis was caused by her use of Baby Powder was awarded more than $70 million in compensation
- In May 2016, a jury awarded $55 million to a woman who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer
- In Feb. 2016, the family of a woman who died from ovarian cancer was awarded $72 million in damages
A J&J spokesperson has stated the company plans to appeal the Los Angeles verdict. The company will continue defending the safety of its talc-based products, including Baby Powder, according to the spokesperson.
